BOPP packaging films are biaxially oriented films produced by melting of a polymer called polypropylene and subsequent stretching, i.e. orienting of film in the machine and cross directions.

BOPP films feature excellent optical properties, high strength and a good barrier against water vapour.

BOPP films are produced in thicknesses ranging from 3 to 50 microns.

Thin BOPP films are mostly used for technical applications. Films in 3 – 50 micron thickness, manufactured in ultra-clean conditions using special raw materials, are used in electrical industry for the production of capacitors, and so are referred to as capacitor films.

Thin BOPP films, however, have a much larger application range, in particular in laminates for the food industry, laminating films, or as separation layers in bitumen insulating sheets for the building industry.

BOPP films are mostly supplied in thicknesses ranging from 15 to 40 microns. These can be of different structures and finishes.

Monolayer films have the simplest structure formed by a single layer of polymer. These films are used for the direct wrapping of foods, flowers and presents, as they feature brilliant gloss. This is also the reason why monolayer films are used as a surface layer in laminated flexible packaging films.

Coextruded film have a more complicated structure consisting of at least three layers of polymer, with heat-sealable outside layers. Structures of coextruded films can differ according to target specifications and final applications, as individual layers may be pigmented, or modified using different additives.

BOPP wrapping films are non-toxic and are suitable for direct contact with food. As a wrapper, they provide necessary protection from humidity and odour. Other technological processes, like metallisation, printing and lamination make them sophisticated plastic packaging with attractive designs which protect wrapped products and extend their shelf-life.
